| Miracle Rat Found in
Tape! A report from the field has
revealed
the existence of a very special strip of painter's tape, bearing the
likeness of 'Jerry', a rat now sadly deceased, but not forgotten.
![]() And here is an image of Jerry: ![]() Be assured the sacred tape is
currently held in a secure location, away from
non-believers. We at Eadie's House breathlessly await the
existence of more rat miracles - can toast be far behind? We know
rats like paint, but they adore snacks!

PETS Act
Is Now Law
|
||
| After the incredible suffering
of Hurricane Katrina, Representatives Tom Lantos (D-CA) and Chris Shays
(R-CT) introduced PETS, the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Act,
which was signed into law by President Bush on October 6th, 2006.
The new law requires state and local jurisdictions to submit disaster preparedness plans that include companion and service animals, in order to qualify for FEMA grants. In addition, FEMA has been authorized to assist with the development of local/state plans and allow federal funding to be used in the creation of animal-friendly emergency shelters. According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), at least 50,000 companion animals were stranded after Hurricane Katrina. The stranded animals included several rats who were either never located and eventually presumed dead, or left without owners. Numerous people also died after refusing to abandon their companion animals when told to evacuate. From In Defense of Animals: |
||
|
According to a poll done by the Fritz Institute in April, nearly half of those who chose to stay behind when rescue workers arrived in New Orleans did so because they bravely refused to abandon their animal friends when their lives were in such severe danger. |

The Wharf Rat Photos! Taken in San Francisco, California during August of 2006. If you recognize the location, please do not spoil the fun and tell everyone - the City does use poison. The Norway rats are *only* in places where food trash has been left uncovered or thrown on the ground. We wandered throughout the area and spoke with security guards; where there is ample light and sanitation, the rats do not appear. The lesson being: if the City does not want rats, folks should pick up their trash. Until then, enjoy! |

| A recent check of the Animal Cruelty Taskforce of Southern Arizona website revealed an interesting tidbit: | ||||||||||
| The Use of Feeder Animals. Many pet stores sell rodents and other small mammals for the purposes of feeding snakes and other various reptiles and predators. Often it is necessary to immobilize the feeder animal so the predator can feed without incurring injury. Unfortunately, too many pet stores use techniques to immobilize feeder animals that are inherently cruel and thereby illegal under city, county and state statutes. These techniques may include "thumping" the animal against a hard surface, freezing the animal alive, drowning, suffocation or breaking the animal's neck by twisting the head. These and other related techniques are illegal and will be prosecuted. |

| Thank you, ACT and officers!
Please remember, however, that cervical dislocation is not an AVMA approved method of euthanasia for larger rats. |
